Frequently Asked Questions

An interview with Greg Johnson, candidate for Portage County Sheriff

What do you hope to accomplish as Sheriff?

As Sheriff, I will focus on continuing to provide the citizens of Portage County with a safe, secure environment to live, work and raise a family. I want to make sure that the operations of the Sheriff’s office are open and transparent, which will naturally enhance the quality of life here. I will make fiscal accountability a priority and foster an atmosphere where two-way communication with the community is open and honest.

What initiatives would you undertake as Sheriff?

I intend to certify our Sheriff’s Office through the Ohio Collaborative, which established state standards and policies for law enforcement agencies. I would also pursue accreditation for our jail’s operations through state and national recognized standards.

I would like to create a Citizen’s Academy and Advisory Board for the Sheriff’s Office, representing different sectors in our community (i.e. local government, business, social service, youth organizations.) This would help the Sheriff’s Office build relationships and trust in the community, as well as provide an avenue for direct constituent feedback, community engagement and collaboration.

What are your thoughts on public safety and your plans for crime prevention?

I believe that public safety is important both a social and an economic issue for Portage County. People and companies are drawn to reside in communities where they know safety is valued and a high priority.

Crime prevention starts with well-trained and supervised law enforcement personnel. Our law enforcement should be resourced appropriately not only to respond to crime, but prevent it, as well. Community engagement is essential to crime fighting, and I intend to build trust with the community so that Portage County residents are willing and confident to come forward with information.

The importance of victim rights must also be a consideration for the Sheriff’s Office. As Sheriff, I would collaborate with the Ohio Crime Prevention Association to provide training for Deputies on building trusting relationships with victims.

What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?

As a law enforcement professional, I am sworn to enforce the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Ohio, including the 2nd Amendment. I support reasonable regulations on firearms, such as background checks.

What do you want the voters of Portage County to know about you?

I have always been a firm believer in the concept of ‘continuous improvement,’ with ongoing personal and organizational development. My father was an entrepreneur and instilled in me a strong work ethic and the importance of truthfulness, honesty and dependability.

People who know me are well aware that the years I have spent in law enforcement have been the most fulfilling and satisfying time of my life. I feel that the office of Sheriff is one of the most rewarding positions one can have the honor of holding. I firmly believe that I have the experience, training, trust and integrity to do right by the people of Portage County, as your Sheriff.
