Meet Greg Johnson

EXPERIENCE

Greg Johnson is a well-seasoned and highly trained law enforcement professional who would bring more than two decades of experience to the Sheriff’s Office. He served in leadership positions with Road Patrol and the Detective Bureau, retiring as Chief Detective for Portage County in 2019. 

During 24 years with the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, he built deep relationships with the Corrections, Court and Prosecutor’s Offices, allowing him to be immediately effective as Sheriff of Portage County. Johnson has worked closely with other law enforcement agencies, including local, state and national agencies.

Johnson is certified in homicide investigative considerations, cell phone investigations and crisis intervention. He has been trained in forensic pathology, high threats and high profile trials, and homicide drowning investigations.

A longtime resident of Portage County, Greg Johnson has made it his life’s work to make our community a safe place in which to work and live. He consistently looks for innovative solutions to improve public safety and increase the trust Portage County residents have in the Sheriff’s Office.

Johnson is a founding member of the Child Abuse Investigative team at Job and Family Services. He has been a member of the Crisis Intervention Team since 2002.
